The second fire broke out at about 1.15pm on Thursday and appliances from East Grinstead, Forest Row, Turners Hill and Edenbridge were called to the scene. About 20 firemen fought the blaze, which caused further damage to the already badly burnt roof. Breathing apparatus was used by firemen to gain access to the rear of the building where the fire was centred. The blaze was brought under control within an hour, despite strong winds hampering firefighting efforts. Assistant divisional fire officer Roy Martin said firemen had been looking for five gas cylinders believed to have been in the building, but only one had been found.
Later Alan Minter, president of the East Grinstead Scout District, contacted Mr Wilkins and agreed to assist immediately and to head the appeal. He had been away for a few days and was distressed on his return to read the local Scouts had lost their home and much of the equipment.
As a result of the fire, a Year of the Scout fete has been arranged to be held in King George's Hall on June 12 with proceeds being donated to the fund. Local leaders and businesses are being asked to support the appeal. Donations should be sent to: 1st East Grinstead Appeal Fund, (Deposit Accounts — 11180819), c/o Barclays Bank Ltd
