A little bit of Scouting history
SEVENTY-EIGHT-YEAR-old Lionel Spillman, one of the oldest ex-scouts in East Grinstead, and eight-year-old James Gray, the youngest cub, met for the first time on Saturday to lay the foundation stone of the new 1st East Grinstead scout headquarters in Moat Road.
The ceremony was attended by an array of scouting dignitaries including the acting district commissioner, Betty Cooper, and John Darwood, who will become the new district commissioner in the next few weeks. Also in attendance were Ivan Shepherd, the district chairman, and Tony Wilkins, who is the group scout leader of the 1st East Grinstead troop.
The foundation stone was blessed by the vicar of St Swithun's Parish Church in East Grinstead, the Rev Roger Brown. After the ceremony Mr Spillman was presented with the trowel he used to lay the stone. The new building is being erected as a replacement for the scouts' former headquarters on the same site which was severely damaged by fire more than a year ago.
